Dunkleosteus lived during the late Devonian period about 360-380million years ago. It had a heavily armoured exterior and was probably a slow but powerful swimmer. It is thought that it lived across a range of divers zones but along inshore waterways. Dunkleosteus possessed two pairs of sharp bony plates which formed a beak like structure for eating. Similar to other placoderms Dunkleosteus might have been among the first vertebrates to internalise egg fertilisation as seen in some modern sharks. There is a famous Dunkleosteus specimen on display at the Queensland Museum in Brisbane, Queensland in Australia.
